The Appeal and Creation Process of Custom Hanging Scrolls

From the History and Appeal of Hanging Scrolls to How to Create Your Own and the Forms They Can Take

Hanging scrolls are a traditional mounting art form that has long been a part of everyday Japanese life. While they have become less commonly seen due to the decline of the tokonoma alcove and the aging of skilled craftspeople, their value has been increasingly reassessed in recent years.

With their design that harmonizes with quiet spaces and their ability to give form to heartfelt sentiments, hanging scrolls are a presence that fits gently into modern life as well.

Here, we touch on the history and uses of hanging scrolls, while introducing ways to create your own original hanging scroll from photos or artwork, as well as how to enjoy modern hanging scrolls through custom ordering services.

The Origins of Hanging Scrolls and Japanese Culture

 掛け軸の起源と日本文化

Hanging scrolls have long been a part of people's everyday lives as one of Japan's traditional mounting art forms. Originating from religious backgrounds, they have since become widely cherished as decorative pieces and gifts in both homes and public facilities. Here, we introduce the history of hanging scrolls and the various occasions on which they have been used.

The Origins of Hanging Scrolls and the Background of Their Introduction to Japan

Hanging scrolls are said to have been introduced to Japan along with Chinese calligraphy and painting culture and the arrival of Buddhism. During the Heian period, they were used as a tool for displaying Buddhist paintings for worship. From the Kamakura to the Muromachi period, with the spread of the tea ceremony and shoin-zukuri architecture, their role as decorative pieces hung in the tokonoma alcove became firmly established, and by the Edo period, paintings and calligraphy suited to the seasons and various occasions came to be widely enjoyed.

The Uses and Appeal of Hanging Scrolls in Modern Times

Today, hanging scrolls are used in a wide variety of occasions, not only for Buddhist ceremonies, but also for celebratory events, seasonal festivities, and life milestones. They are increasingly being chosen not just as decorations for Japanese-style rooms, but also as commemorative gifts for occasions such as the birth of a child, Shichi-Go-San, weddings, and 60th birthday celebrations.

While their uses have evolved with the times, hanging scrolls have remained deeply rooted in Japanese life and culture. Valued not only for the quiet elegance they bring to a space, but also as a means of conveying heartfelt feelings and personal stories, they continue to be chosen by many. As a new form of Japanese aesthetic that gently carries the feelings of the giver, their significance will only continue to grow.

How Are Custom Hanging Scrolls Made? A Guide to the Creation Process

Hanging scrolls are a uniquely Japanese art form in which works of calligraphy or painting are mounted by combining and joining cloth and Japanese paper. Authentic hanging scrolls are finished entirely by hand by skilled craftspeople, through processes such as backing, drying, and joining. For experiential workshops, however, a simplified method known as 'karimaki' (temporary mounting) is sometimes used.

Karimaki is appealing because it allows anyone to easily create their own original hanging scroll while still reproducing the traditional structure in a simplified form. Below, we introduce the general steps involved in making a karimaki hanging scroll.

The Basic Steps of Creating a Hanging Scroll

For those who want to enjoy creating a hanging scroll as a hands-on experience, there is a method known as 'karimaki.' Karimaki is a way of assembling a hanging scroll that reproduces its basic structure while omitting steps such as backing and drying that are involved in traditional mounting. Below, we introduce the process of making a karimaki hanging scroll.

Step 1: Prepare the Honshi (Main Paper)

Begin by preparing the artwork that will serve as the centerpiece of the hanging scroll. Calligraphy, paintings, and photographs are commonly used, and thin, flat materials such as Japanese paper or drawing paper are well suited for this purpose. Since the main paper greatly influences the overall impression of the hanging scroll, careful attention should be given to its placement and sizing.

Step 2: Decide on the Finished Size and Layout

Even with karimaki, keeping the basic structure of a hanging scroll in mind — such as leaving space at the top and bottom, positioning the main paper in the center, and allowing margins around the edges — will result in a neat and well-balanced finish. Deciding in advance how much decorative border to add above, below, and on either side of the main paper will make the process of joining the pieces together go smoothly.

Step 3: Prepare the Mounting Materials (Decorative Paper or Fabric)

Prepare the decorative paper or fabric to be attached above, below, and on either side of the main paper. These materials serve a role similar to that of fabric borders in traditional mounting and, while not strictly required, they help to create a sense of cohesion and elegance in the overall piece.

Step 4: The Joining Process

Arrange the main paper and decorative materials in a well-balanced composition, then join them together on a flat surface using glue or double-sided tape. Taking care to press them down without trapping any air will result in a smooth, wrinkle-free finish. Even if the process cannot fully replicate techniques such as traditional joining, being mindful of the structure will give the piece the appearance of an authentic hanging scroll.

Step 5: Attach the Roller (or a Substitute)

Attaching a round rod to the top and bottom will provide stability when rolling or hanging the scroll. Secure them using tape or glue, adhering them to the back so they are not visible from the front.

Step 6: Attach the Hanging Cord

If you plan to display the scroll by hanging it, attach a cord to the upper rod. Simply securing it to the back with tape or glue is sufficient. This step can be skipped if you intend to store the scroll without displaying it.

Step 7: Completion and Final Adjustments

Once you have stepped back to check the overall balance and made any necessary adjustments, the scroll is complete. Karimaki is a simplified format, but by carefully choosing materials and being thoughtful about the layout, it is possible to come close to the basic form of a traditional hanging scroll. The finished piece can also be rolled up for storage, making it well suited for use as a gift or as a keepsake to preserve.

Although the method is simple, incorporating the traditional concept of 'centering the main paper and arranging the composition around it' results in a finished piece that has a careful and refined appearance.
